Korean Holidays

Korea uses a lunar calendar. It is custom for Koreans to use this kind of calendar system to keep track of births, deaths and some traditional holidays. Many people though, celebrate their birthdays according to both calendars.

Solar Calendar:

New Year's: January 1st and 2nd
Independence Movement Day: March 1st
Arbor Day: April 5th
Children's Day: May 5th
Memorial Day: June 6th
Constitution Day: July 17th
Liberation Day: August 15th
Foundation Day: October 3rd
Peppero day: November 11th
Christmas Day: December 25th

Lunar Calendar:

New Year's (Seol-nal) is different every year, but is a three day holiday
Buddha's Birthday (Seokka Tanshin-il) falls on the 8th day of 4th month of the year
Harvest Moon Festival (Chuesok) – is on the 14th to the 16th of the 8th month of the year

January 27th: Lunar New Year
March 1st: Independence Movement Day
May 2nd: Buddha's Birthday
May 5th: Children's Day
May 15th: Teacher’s Day- it is not an official holiday, but teachers get presents from kids and parents
June 6th: Memorial Day
August 15th: Liberation Day
October 3rd: National Foundation Day
October 2nd-4th: Chuseok
December 25th: Christmas Day
